Geothermal Drilling

Geothermal drilling may seem like a highly technical process, but with recent advancements in technology, it has become more efficient and cost-effective than ever. As a renewable energy source, geothermal energy offers significant benefits by helping to lower carbon emissions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and creating jobs in the renewable energy sector worldwide. By harnessing the heat stored beneath the Earth's surface, we can power homes and businesses in an environmentally sustainable way, leading to savings on energy bills and greener living spaces.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs)

A key application of geothermal drilling is in conjunction with Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs). These systems use the naturally heated groundwater found near or below the Earth’s surface. By circulating water through underground loops of pipes, heat is transferred between the circulating liquid and nearby aquifers. GSHPs provide an efficient means of harnessing this heat for heating and cooling spaces, making them a highly effective solution for energy efficiency.

To facilitate this, we use state-of-the-art drilling rigs, equipped with Tier 4 and 5 Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) compliant engines. This ensures that we can work in a variety of locations, from city centres to remote sites, while maintaining a minimal carbon footprint.

As legislation evolves, such as the Isle of Man government's recent ban on installing oil and gas boilers in new builds, the demand for GSHP systems is growing. GSHP systems outperform alternatives like air source heat pumps, delivering greater efficiency without being affected by seasonal temperature changes or saltwater interference.

Services

Our geothermal drilling services include:

  • Drilling to various depths depending on the project requirements.

  • Recycling of drilling fluid to minimize liquid waste and keep drill sites clean.

  • Installation of GSHP loops in a closed-loop system to ensure maximum heat transfer efficiency.

  • Use of high-performance grouting, applied from the bottom of the borehole to the surface to eliminate any voids.

  • Pressure testing.

  • Environmentally responsible site demobilization, following a “leave no trace” approach.

Water Wells

Our expertise extends to drilling water wells, providing access to clean drinking water in difficult-to-reach locations while easing the burden on surface water sources like lakes and rivers. With the increasing demand for private water supplies, our borehole drilling technology has proven itself time and again for both commercial and agricultural purposes.

With 25 years of experience, our team excels at delivering efficient water wells. We can operate in almost any location, regardless of size, topography, or accessibility. Our focus is on overcoming site challenges to provide fully functional boreholes on every project.

Water well drilling typically involves mobilizing a tracked rig, along with equipment such as air compressors, steel casings, and drill bits. We advance steel casing through soil layers until we reach bedrock, at which point we employ the open-hole drilling method to continue. High-pressure air is used to flush cuttings from the borehole, and the waste material is managed appropriately. The borehole diameter typically ranges from 140mm to 250mm, with depths between 60 and 80 meters, depending on the location of the aquifer. In some cases, we drill considerably deeper to secure a reliable water source.

With rising water costs, installing a private water supply is a smart investment. The key benefit of having your own water supply is knowing the purity of your water.

Geotechnical Drilling

We offer a comprehensive range of geotechnical drilling and site investigation services, utilising various drilling techniques to suit specific site conditions:

  • Rotary Coring: Using conventional ‘core and case’ or Geobor-S wireline systems.

  • Rotary Percussive: Using down-the-hole hammer with air flush.

  • Dynamic Sampling: Dual-purpose drilling rigs allow for follow-on drilling, eliminating the need for separate rigs.

  • Rotary Open Hole: Flush with water, air, or a combination of both.

Our teams are highly trained and qualified, with CSCS and NVQ Level 2 certifications, ensuring professional and friendly service on all projects. We understand the importance of precise sample recovery for geotechnical investigations, whether it's UT70, samples, or cores for further analysis. We are committed to delivering clear, accurate data in a timely manner, allowing you to make informed decisions about your project.
